THE PRACTICE

Welcome to Hope Vets. We are a small animal veterinary practice between Bovingdon and Flaunden.

Most veterinary practices are limited by the space they have available and we have spent many frustrated years watching our patients stress exacerbated by the poor design of clinics we have worked in. But our new clinic is purpose built from scratch and has been designed with your pets in mind, providing them with a quiet, less scary place to recover from procedures or illnesses.

Even though we are small, our custom built clinic has a full range of facilities enabling us to give your pets the care they deserve. We pride ourselves on our friendly and personal approach, so you can rest assured that you will always see the same vet or nurse. We are looking forward to getting to know you and your pets.

 Facilities and services

Consultations: Whatever your problem, big or small, book an appointment to see us. Not only do we have expertise in diagnosis and treatment of disease, but we can also advise you on all aspects of health and preventative medicine for your pet. Many problems befalling pets can be prevented or eased by proper preventative medicine or better knowledge of our pet’s wants and needs. At Hope Vets we consider this care to be our responsibility and so we will be on hand to help and advise you on the care of your pet.

Operations: Unfortunately, sometimes medicine just isn’t enough and your pet may need an operation to get things sorted. We have a dedicated operating theatre which is fully equipped and ready for action. In order to ensure that your pet receives the best care whilst under anaesthetic our fully trained and highly experienced staff have the full range of monitoring equipment to keep your pet safe.

Hospitalisation: However heartbreaking it is, sometimes your pet may need to stay with us in order to receive specialist care. We try and make this stay as comfortable and stress free as possible. To this end we have separate dog and cat wards, ensuring that barking dogs aren’t terrifying wide eyed cats. We also have an isolation ward, well away from the hubbub of normal surgery life. This allows more sensitive creatures a quiet respite. We are also spoilt for outdoor space, which means that providing your dog is well enough there is plenty of room for gentle exercise and a change of scenery. With Stephanie, our vet, living close by, all hospitalised animals are checked as often as their condition requires overnight and over weekends, ensuring they receive the very best of care. In the worst of circumstances, should your pet require intensive care, we also have the back up of a dedicated, 24 hour emergency service who provide specialist, high quality care any hour of the weekend or night.

Diagnostic imaging: We have a full range of diagnostic imaging equipment. This allows us to see inside your pet, so we can work out what’s going wrong. We have an X-ray machine and processor on site giving us x-ray vision almost as good as Superman. If that isn’t enough we also have a ultrasound machine – perfect for watching hearts beating, detecting pregnancy and visualising inside the abdomen.

Laboratory: Sometimes seeing is not enough to make a diagnosis, you need to measure things. We have blood machines on site which give us information on your pet’s organ function within minutes. If this isn’t enough we are also equipped to perform urinalysis and cytology on site as well.

Dentistry: Vets have to be jacks of all trades and to this end we also take responsibility for your pet’s oral health. We would love to prevent all problems and have all animals teeth brushed as diligently as yours are, but unfortunately this isn’t always the case. For animals with dental problems we have full facilities to deal with it, from a high speed drill to an ultrasonic de-scaler and a polishing unit. This means we can get your dog’s breath smelling sweet and pleasant!

Supplies: Whatever you need, from pet food to flea treatments to odour eliminator, we’ve got it (and if we haven’t got it, we can usually get it for you). Not only that but we also stock a full range of medications, so whatever your pet needs, it gets as soon as possible. We are also happy to supply you with a prescription, with which you can obtain medications from other vets or pharmacies although of course we can only prescribe drugs to animals which we have responsibility for and have examined. We understand that drug bills can add up, particularly when your pet needs long term treatment. At Hope Vets we try to keep the cost of long term medications as low as possible. The prices of any medication are available on request.

Puppy parties: We believe that early socialisation of puppies and good education for new puppy owners is essential in preventing problems. To this end, we offer puppy parties – an opportunity for your puppy to interact with other puppies of a similar age and an opportunity for you to get to know other sleep deprived owners of mad, table chewing pups. Oh and we’ll give you all the help and advice you need whilst you are here.

Physiotherapy: Just like people, animals can often benefit from physiotherapy for rehabilitation as well as the management of common conditions such as arthritis. We are fortunate to have an extremely exsperienced ACPAT registered physio - Diane Messum - who regularly provides physio sessions at the surgery.

 24 hour emergency service

Animals being animals, they don’t always run to schedule so in the case of an emergency there is always help and advice available 24 hours a day. Just call 01442 833 198 and a recorded message will give you a number to phone which goes directly to the vet on call. If it were up to Stephanie she would be on call all the time but in order that she is fresh and on the ball to treat your animals during the day we feel it is important to give her a break. So we use a dedicated 24 hour emergency service called Vets Now. Vets Now are staffed by specialist emergency vets and nurses who are up all night, all weekends (from Saturday 12pm onward) and bank holidays caring for sick animals. They have full facilities with the state of the art emergency equipment and staff very experienced in their field. Located only 10 minutes away in Hemel, overnight and at weekends they take over Barton Lodge’s newly refurbished premises in Midland Road and will be there waiting to help you with any urgent queries or emergencies at any hour. Although they are using Barton Lodge’s premises they remain independent and provide the out of hours cover not only for us but also for the vast majority of vets in this area.
