Beef jerky alert!

Comments Off on Beef jerky alert!

The VPIS (or the Veterinary Poisons Information Service to me and you) have advised against buying and feeding your pets beef jerky, specifically cheap beef jerky produced in China, some even sold through Pets At Home.

This is following 22 reported cases of illness in dogs over the UK, 9 of which are still recovering. The treats, once eaten can cause decreased appetite, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhoea, increased drinking and weeing. This disease is called Fanconi syndrome and is caused an excess in certain vitamins and minerals in the meat.

If you notice any of these signs please call 01442 833198 to get your animal booked in as soon as possible or call the Animal Poisonline on 01202 509 000. The line is open 24 hours a day and costs between £20-30.

Also watch out for cheap peanut butter! Some manufacturers are replacing natural sugar in peanut butter with a sweetener called Xylitol which is toxic to dogs.
